If you love layers of crispy filo, you will love Croatian bakeries.
From savoury burek, to desserts crammed with sweet nuts, there are some excellent options available. Which brings me to strudel.

My familiarity with strudel comes mainly from acceptable frozen apple and raisin ones that would turn up for dessert sometimes in my younger years.
In the Croatian bakeries I visited the most common varieties on offer were apple, cherry or sweet cheese, and I tried the last two.
Unbelievably for me, I actually preferred the cherry option (štrudla od višanja). The sweet curds in the cheese strudel were pleasant but bland. The cherry reminded me of a tin of pie filling but better – fruity, gloopy and sweet. The pastry was deliciously crunchy, and the whole thing was still warm, which made it extra pleasing.
Now we just need to start selling them in the UK.
