An On-Foot Food Tour of Glasgow’s West End: Route 1

Man, this post has taken a long time!

It’s mostly because I don’t enjoy making maps. I kept putting it off and putting it off, and now we’re well into December when I actually did the walk on a frosty day in November.

As a result of postponement the details have receded into the fog slightly, so it is not the most detailed tour I’ve compiled, but there are a plethora of places to check out.

An On-Foot Food Tour of Troon

While down south sunny days and unseasonal heatwaves have been occurring, up here we have been having a lot of rain, broken up by grey skies, strong winds and the occasional burst of hail.

Noting the potential arrival of a single sunny day, I reserved it for another food tour, and some research and a print-out later, I was in the seaside town of Troon.

I have only been to Troon a few times before, and never into the actual town. Instead I’ve gone to the harbour to Wee Hurrie, a great fish and chip shop that fries while you wait, and the neighbouring McCallum’s Oyster Bar, where I eschewed oysters in favour of some wonderful fish. An On-Foot Food Tour of Ayr

When I moved to Ayrshire, one of the things I was most looking forward to was finding new places to buy and eat delicious food.

The “South-of-Oxford Locavore Stock-up” Loop

Having lived in a small village 10 miles south-west of Oxford, my food knowledge is heavily focused on the surrounding area. A weekly shop being more practical for us, sometimes we hit the supermarket, and other times we drive to one or more nearby local shops to stock up.

If you have a spare few hours, a car, and an inclination to support local businesses, I recommend the following. Continue reading The “South-of-Oxford Locavore Stock-up” Loop

An On-Foot Food Tour of Oxford

I have lived around Oxford for about five years. I can’t say I’ve ever come to love the city like many do, but you can easily get a good meal here, and there are lots of interesting little places to pick up tasty tidbits. With that in mind, I decided to write up a suggested itinerary for a gastronomic walking tour, with stops at some of my favourite places.

Before continuing, I should clarify that my sphere of knowledge is limited to those parts near my office, the bus station and the houses of friends, so this isn’t a comprehensive assessment of all the delights to be found within the ring road. However I hope that there are enough ideas here to get you started. Continue reading An On-Foot Food Tour of Oxford
