Cornish Fare: Saffron Buns

What does saffron taste like?

I don’t know. I mean I’ve eaten things with saffron in of course. It bestows a beautiful yellow hue, sometimes flecked with delicate orange strands if the stamens are left whole.  But I can’t say that I’ve ever come away knowing what it tastes like.

In the interests of research, I decided to wait to post this until I had cleared the mystery up. However I kept forgetting to buy any, and when I did remember to look, there was never any on the shelves.

In the end, I decided that it was better just to forge ahead with posts and maybe one day, I’ll get hold of some saffron and find out its secrets.

As for the saffron bun? It tasted like a fruity, slightly honeyed bread roll. This particular one was a little bit dense for my taste.

As a side note, I saw some bakeries promoting their saffron buns as containing real saffron. It seems a sad state of affairs when something called a saffron bun might not contain any actual saffron.
