Croatia Food Exploration: Rafioli

I happened to end up in Trogir in Croatia late one evening, and was on the prowl for a snack.

green and white rafioli

One of the gelaterias had some little pasty-shaped treats in green, pink, brown and white. I had no idea what they were, but opted for the pink and brown variants, thinking one was probably chocolate and the other…pink flavour.

I went back the next morning before my bus, and bought one each of the other two colours, to try the full set. It was then I noticed the sign promoting rafioli, which the internet says is a famous Croatian cookie.

So what are rafioli? They have a thin, unsweetened pastry shell, and are filled with chopped nuts and some squishy sugariness that binds it together. Reading some recipes it sounds like egg white, sugar and additional flavours like citrus, maraschino or rose are added to the nuts (hence the squishy sugariness), and, as I look now, probably lard to the pastry (and possibly the middle). Oops. Crap vegetarian strikes again.

The colours indicated various additions such as fig (green), chocolate (brown) and white chocolate and ?rose (pink).

I liked the chocolate ones best, but they were all tasty, and easy to eat in a few bites.
