This post was written over a year ago and then forgotten – but here it finally is.
Dessert is a course I rarely reach.
I find it very hard to ignore starters, and this inevitably means that by the time the dessert menu comes, I am full. Sometimes I have two starters and no main, or if it is a small plates place I rein it in, but I often get to the end of the meal and know that I just can’t fit anything else in.
As you may have gathered from the sudden arrival of posts, one of my goals for this year was to be better at updating this poor neglected blog.
Thus from big flat pancakes to adorable mini pancakes: poffertjes!
I’m kicking off the first of my posts from a brief Amsterdam trip last year with this beauty.
The first night we were in Hanoi there was the Friday night street market in the Old Quarter. This meant, among other things, a lot of food stalls.
We meandered from place to place, sampling different bits and pieces, but I was drawn to a bicycle with a box on the back where an interesting looking dessert was being created.
One of the Thai few foods I wasn’t very taken with when I tried it a few years ago was khanom tua baep. The casing was bland and the bean filling even more so.
So when I saw pak mor being made in a similar fashion (white batter smoothed over muslin to steam, then filled), I was a little concerned.
